healthy schmealthy

Dan & I both had our first phone calls with our health coaches this week. I had mine today. It was about 25 minutes and we just talked about the results of my health assessment and some of my current health habits and what changes I would like to make. We then set two goals--one nutritional and one physical activity. So, starting tomorrow I will be eating 5 servings of fruits and vegetables a day and exercising at least 20 minutes three times a week. Dan is also increasing his fruit and vegetable intake so I went to the store tonight and stocked us up--apples, oranges, bananas, broccoli, carrots, celery, cauliflower. We have a produce section in our fridge!

I have procrastinated this whole exercising thing way too long. I have at least 40 pounds that I want to lose and would be ecstatic to lose 50. I would love to lose 10 of that by the end of the month when we got to Seattle for my nephew's baby blessing. None of this is going to happen by sleeping in, eating ice cream, and who knows what else all day.

So, here's the plan:
1. Get up at 7:00 each morning and exercise for 30 minutes before Lincoln gets up.
2. Eat a healthy breakfast.
3. Drink plenty of water (and more water than Diet Coke!)
4. Limit my sugar/sweet intake. I started this tonight by not buying ice cream at the store! But, I did have to wait in line and the cashier gave me a free candy bar for being patient. But I didn't eat it...yet.
5. When I need a snack throughout the day, eat fruits and veggies.

Wish me luck!

  1. Good luck with everything. Your list sounds like mine, I need more healthy food, less junk food and definately more water. So I really mean good luck, I know it can be hard, but you can do it.

  2. You can do it! The biggest tip that I have is to sign up on thedailyplate.com! It tells you, based on your weight and height, how many calories you can eat to lose 1 or 2 pounds a week. I did track all of my calories on this website for quite a while and ended up losing 9 pounds in about 4 weeks. Now, I don't track it, but I kind-of know what I can eat and what I can't to stay at my calorie intake. Anyway, it definately isn't fun, but I know you can do it! Good Luck!

  3. Good luck. I know I don't have the motivation to get up before my baby to exercise. :)

  4. You are better than me. I have resigned myself to the fact that there is no human way posible to get to a desirable weight even if I did torture myself with eating healthy.

  5. Good luck guys! I think it's awesome that your guys are doing this. I found out something interesting lately (and you probably already know this). The more water you drink will raise your metabolism. Another thing I thought was interesting (again, I didn't know this until I was watching Good Morning America this morning)was that your waistline in inches should be half of your height. And your blood pressure (optimally) should be 115/75. I thought it was really cool. I'm trying to be a little more healthy too. Good luck guys! YOU CAN DO IT!!!

  9. Hey, it was great seeing you again and getting to chat over lunch.
I am with you on your goals. I would love to join you in your quest to being healthy. Like I said, it helps to have a buddy... but if only we can find away to support each other despite the great distance between us. Good luck!
